wacky capping mishap

« 22 September 2007 | 7:36 | At the Brewery | No Comments »

One morning during the beginning of a bottling run, Shawn brought this bottle in with a special request.   He asked that I find some mini-tusks or horns to add to this Viking-style cap edition of the brew.

Any how.. I failed, but we left this bottle in the lab for a while to gaze at in [...]

He’Brew – Rye India Pale Ale

« 22 September 2007 | 7:31 | beer reviews | No Comments »

This is a big IPA, 10% abv, and it might need some time to mellow.  It’s HOT!

Caramel-malt sweetness and a good hop wallop. Great color, and head retention. Good beer, but I was not blown away.  This is evidence of the difficulty of making a BIG beer, but also a drinkable one.   I’d like to [...]

Empyrean Hefe-Weizen Almost Gone!

« 22 September 2007 | 7:11 | At the Brewery | No Comments »

Lazlo’s South, Omaha, and Fireworks still have some. Fremont is now serving the wonderful Belgian style wheat – now with real belgian yeast for some phenolics and fruity esters. I was surprised to find that one frequently used spice was omitted from the recipe by head brewer Rich Chapin. In any event, this beer is [...]

Wild weekend.

« 17 September 2007 | 8:14 | various stuff | No Comments »

There was a shooting just out our window  saturday night/sunday morning – here’s the journal star’s paragraph.  Alison was on the news after a little encouraging.  HFM didn’t win the battle of the bands for the derby girls and I had a 6 pack of the Great Divide – Titan IPA.  It’s good.

Riding my Bike to work is good most of the time.

« 8 September 2007 | 11:04 | At the Brewery | 1 Comment »

I have been riding my cruiser to work for the past 6 weeks and it’s been a welcome change from the commute. My dad just gave me his old Panasonic 18 speed. The change to gears is also very nice. There’s a little rack over the rear tire. Perfect for toting beer around, right?

This week [...]

Retiring my first pair of work gloves

« 8 September 2007 | 10:44 | At the Brewery | No Comments »

My first pair of gloves are retired. They lasted just over 6 weeks. There’s a hole in the middle finger of the left glove. I tend to sweat… a lot, and as you can see – the gloves get sweaty. They smell bad and they are covered with all the crap that [...]

Rogue – Kell’s Irish Lager

« 3 September 2007 | 16:16 | beer reviews | No Comments »

I am not the biggest fan of Lagers – But I put my faith in rogue and this was not a let down.
A golden – orange color with White head.  Starts at an inch, down to a small layer with in 2 months.
Smell has a hint of a belgian beer. It might be the sterling [...]

Grimbergen Blonde

« 3 September 2007 | 16:09 | beer reviews | No Comments »

6.7% abv – 11.2oz
Filtered with no sediment – why am I thinking of Tremens? – but not as carbed.
The bottle plays up the abbey – abbey inn/pilgram t hing. Stating the recipe originates from the middle-ages. Nice fruity notes mid-taste. a bit of head remains. A touch of La Fin Du Monde – less corriander [...]
